Assessment of Phonological Awareness

First, a reminder... 

There are professionals who are trained and equipped with the proper tools to assess phonological awareness. The information provided below is for educators/parents to do a quick, informal assessment of PA skills and should not be considered an official evaluation. 

A few things to keep in mind...

An informal assessment can help teachers and parents recognize where their child may need some focused practice. 

  • The target age of this assessment would be Pre-K - Grade 2.

  • FUN - Phonological Awareness should always be fun and never feel like a boring “drill”

  • The assessment progresses from easy to difficult activities. If you are assessing young children (ex. Pre-K) they will likely have more difficulty in the later activities because they are still developing basic PA skills

  • Feel free to use only some sections - depending on the skills you’d like to focus on
